Michael John Toomey

The story of Michael John Toomey is above all an exemplary story of success achieved by unfailing loyalty, discipline and operational excellence. The principles he established and the values he instilled in his people remain at the core of who we are today. It assists us as we navigate through changing and challenging times across the industries we operate in.

Born in Langdon Hills, in 1938 he was the youngest by 5 years of seven children. Michael John Toomey began working at the age of 16, he spent some time working with his Father on Fizakallys Farm in South Woodham Ferrers. After, Michael John Toomey took a position in the Army. He became an expert weapons instructor and trained officers many levels above him. He thrived in a disciplined environment and embraced this opportunity to serve the Nation wholeheartedly.

However, property and construction were his main passion, therefore pursued this upon his return back to the UK. Initially, he worked on a sub-contract basis for a local builder – this was what kick-started his career in construction and property.

The Entrepreneurial Journey Started...

In 1968, Michael John Toomey obtained a stake in his father's company, Laindon Holdings Limited. Later, in 1971, he had purchased sufficient shares to attain a controlling interest, and thereafter, he consistently bought more share blocks until he ultimately gained complete ownership of the company.

From 1968 to 2021, he worked tirelessly and was relentlessly focussed in building all aspects of the business into the strong and successful company it is today. Always striving for improvement, constantly changing and consistently picking the right people that helped deliver this success.

Michael John Toomey strongly believed “there isn’t anything you can’t do, work at it and you will achieve!” His greatest vision was the all-inclusive retirement apartment concept that he developed. A simple idea, that has taken 15 years to prove. He was so convinced that this innovative approach to providing housing for elderly people was the right one.

His Fierce Loyalty to staff and partnerships...

His business family of 380 staff and numerous associates were important to him. He showed great loyalty to his staff and they, in turn, returned that loyalty. He was extremely proud of the fact that there are many long-serving people in the business, and was very conscious of the contribution made by every member of staff to the success of the company.

His loyalty, energy and optimism won him the confidence and support of many. Michael John Toomey believe opportunities were there to be taken. One of his favourite sayings “You’ll miss 100% of every opportunity you never take”. He had the ability to identify and develop strategies to strengthen our resolve and continuously develop the business portfolio.

In 2021, Michael John Toomey registered the Joseph Toomey Charitable Foundation, dedicated to assisting elderly individuals in the local community. The primary goal of the Charitable Foundation is to address the needs of the elderly by offering affordable home ownership and related services, aiming to improve their quality of life and well-being.
